Domain 1 - Planning and Preparation
1a: Demonstrating Knowledge of Content and Pedagogy
Learning needs to flow smoothly in order for students to demonstrate confidence in their learning. This flow needs to be guided by the classroom teacher. In order for this flow to work, a road-map must be created. This road-map is the weekly lesson plan that many schools require. Whether these weekly lesson plans are a requirement of the school, administration or the department, teachers should always create a plan. There are various formats to develop these plans in addition to programs or applications that can assist a teacher in creating these plans.
Plans, just as road-maps, can be adjusted based on experiences. Just as travelers can divert to avoid bumps in the roads by finding alternate routes, teachers, when faced with unexpected situations, can make notations on their plans of areas that need to be revisited. Flexibility in lesson plans provides for opportunities for learning.

1b: Demonstrating Knowledge of Students
As a mother of three daughters, all different in many ways, I believe that every student is different and should be treated as such. Students culture should be included in the lesson planning, personal experiences can be used in order to make lessons relevant to a students life. This relevancy can help students remain engaged.
The beginning of the school year is key to discovering the many nuances of a students life. Investigating student interests and participating in many of the activities that students are part of, will help to show that a teacher is invested in their students future. This investment will promote participation among students that can help them to meet and achieve goals both in and out of the classroom environment.

1c: Setting Instructional Outcomes
Outcomes should provide students with realistic learning goals. However, in addition to learning goals set by the instructor, students should be encouraged to go further. They should be encouraged to take their learning further through reading suggestions, research topics that allow for higher level thinking and presenting what they have learned with other students.

1d: Demonstrating Knowledge of Resources
Availability of resources within urban school districts can be a tricky thing to manage. Textbooks are often outdated, access to technology for all students is not always available. Technology as a whole is a wonderful tool for educating and learning, however, teachers must be able to supplement materials.
In preparation for lessons, I have begun to acquire textbooks, supplemental books, newsletters, videos, and artifacts that I can bring into the classroom environment. As I visit historical locations, I inquire about teacher lesson plans and resources. Materials or artifacts offered by these locations, are often offered either for free or for teacher discount. Additionally, searching online give away sites or visiting thrift stores, can typically provide for an opportunity to obtain pertinent materials for education. Many schools today have libraries that are unused, books and encyclopedias that are sitting on shelves taking up space. As a teacher, these are additional resources that could perhaps be incorporated into the classroom to encourage students to utilize non-technological means of acquiring information.
And lastly, as a teacher, I hope to be able to seek out materials offered by professional organizations and communities that can supplement the learning environment. These supplements may also include guest speakers who can give real life perspective on the subject. matter.

1e: Designing Coherent Instruction
As students all learn differently, lesson plans will include opportunities for students to choose activities and groups that they feel that they will be able to excel. These types of opportunities will help to differentiate activities to accommodate students who have specific, individualized needs. Activities such as these will be higher-level and challenging in order to maximize learning and growth as leaders as well as, team players. These two skills are necessary for when students graduate and either go on to college or into the workplace.
Instruction should prepare students for the real-world, providing them with the skills that they will need to succeed. Lessons should also provide students with opportunity to reflect on what they have learned and how they will use that knowledge in the future.

1f: Designing Student Assessments
Assessments should be developed prior to the start of the lesson unit. The type of assessment should vary and should provide students with the opportunity to have some input in the type and content. The use of formative assessments should be incorporated throughout the lesson unit. These formative assessments will help to adjust the coursework and the final assessments. The creation of rubrics should include students participation in order that students have a sense of ownership in the classroom.
