The Star Spangled Banner (United States National Anthem)
by Francis Scott Key.
Students learned how the Star Spangled Banner came to be written by Francis Scott Key. They were asked to write a 5th verse to the National Anthem describing our nation today. To finish the assignment, they were to explain why they composed it in that way.
Star Spangled Banner - 5th Verse
That star spangled banner, still does wave
That hope of a land free, became true
But do you know what we never knew?
Looking back at a country so full of meaning,
We’d come to question this song’s being
Forget the words, forget what you’re hearing
Because under one nation, we have one obligation
To stand united and brave
I chose these lyrics because they represent how I feel. I know many people think that this song should not be our national anthem because it does not represent the whole. But think of this, the lyrics are not what makes this country what it is. The people within, the ones who made the sacrifices to be where they are today, those are the people that make this country. And that is what we should remember, not the lyrics to a song which may or may not be to your liking.
O’ yet if we are all free
Then why are all those men enslaved?
Those men whom have the same inalienable rights
O’ yes, we claim to be just and fake
But kick those out looking for a better life,
Yet are we not ourselves immigrants of this wonderful land?
Now, an America that treats everyone equal is a great America,
An America where women have equal rights and whose voices are heard
O’ this America is a great America.
I worded it the way I did because even now, women are treated as less on many occasions. Also there is still that oppression that some people are more superior to others because of skin color and I believe that America should not be like this because this country was founded on the basis of freedom and liberty but instead only some are truly free and have the liberty to do what they want.
O say can you see by the light of the phone
Trump has become pres. What has America turned into
Whose country votes for one who is foolish, a racist and sexist
Over the kind man Bernie Sanders, we’re so unconsciously daydreaming?
And then Trump officially is it, the people bursting in air
Gave proof through the night that our citizens are not thinking
O say does America have a great president today?
Over the so called land of the free and the home of the brave
I worded it the way I did due to the fact that after President Barack Obama has left his presidency, America has turned themselves into a huge catastrophe because the president we have in modern day is not very intelligent. An example being, Trump wants to get into war with North Korea which really is not a great idea because it is controlled by a dictator who does inhumane, horrifying things to his people of his country and has plenty of people by his side. As well as how the citizens of our country picked this ridiculous president and is now furious for how he is. The citizens of the United States picked a racist and sexist man.
As America raise the flag with blood
Other nations dies in its flood
As the citizens sleep in there home isolated
Other citizen sleep with their freedom awaited
As the people safe in their house live in
Other countries in their family blood lie in.
This verse represent the situation of American people today, although there is alot of social media that “connect the world”, people still ignorant about the others living condition, and judge each other as if they known them for years. This creates many misunderstandings and tension between two people.
Today’s world has many plights
That we cannot seem to fix
Terrorism is at its high
And safety is at its low
People are getting killed
And wars are being fought
However we must
We must win over them
To restore a better world
Where people are unharmed
Explanation: I wrote my 5th verse about some of the problems that our world faces today. Some of these include religious conflicts and terrorism. I believe that these are some of the worst problems that our world has to face due to the fact that these problems affect innocent bystanders every day. To conclude, I finished up my verse on a happier note since we have to do whatever it takes to make this world safer and for people to be unharmed.
When the sun begins to rise, and our sons they still fall,
Soon we realize, that we aren’t free at all.
With the fear in our eyes, and the faint children cries
We’re killing our brothers, we don’t love one another.
But there is still hope, as a nation we can cope,
With ol’ Glory we still stand, one land hand in hand.
So as the star spangled banner still waves,
America, forever the free and the home of the brave.
I worded my fifth verse like this because in today’s America, we see a lot of violence, terrorism, and unjust acts that occur everyday which as a nation we are not proud of. As well as racism and discrimination that still occurs to this day. However, I do feel like America and the American people are strong and when we need to, we come together in unity to make our nation a better place for one another.
